Kids and Sewing

People often say sewing is a lost art. I feel as though I can safely say a majority of our mothers and/or grandmothers sewed. They made drapery for our bedrooms and special occasion dresses for weddings and proms, halloween costumes, and mended/hemmed/patched our clothing. They created pieces that were unique and possibly something they wouldn’t be able to buy or find in stores. As time passed it seemed as though less people were interested in learning to sew. Maybe it was the mass production of clothing, where you could buy it cheaper than you could purchase fabric to make it yourself? Or maybe it was our faster paced lifestyle that aided in the deterioration of the art of sewing? Sewing, once a necessity, now seemed a rarity.

I will be forever grateful for my mom who taught me to sew. It is my therapy and creative outlet. It has taught me that I can do hard things and has even allowed me to exlpore creating/building in ways other than just sewing. I love taking a piece of fabric (or anything really) and turning it into something useful. Even more than sewing myself, I love teaching kids to sew. Watching a child walk into my house without having ever operated a sewing machine and walk out so proud of the project they made is truly rewarding. Problem solving, patience and determination are just a few things I witness every time I have a class. Sewing is a life-long skill that helps foster creativity and gives kids a sense of accomplishment. I was searching for some sewing project ideas and ran across this article from Martha Stewart. I loved reading all about her top 5 reasons kids should learn to sew.

  1. Developing Hand-Eye Coordination
  2. Learning Math Skills
  3. Mending their Clothes
  4. Planning and Preparation
  5. Exploring Creativity and Accomplishment

If your child is interested in learning to sew you can check out my weekly classes HERE. Sessions are 6 weeks long. Registration for the next session will be at the end of August. It will run from the beginning of October to mid November. I always give current students time to register before opening up registration to new students. If your schdule is busy during the week try our sewing parties! I offer a themed party once a month. This is great for beginners and advanced sewers alike. If you have a group of 4-6 kids I am happy to schedule a party for your group! Just email me! Sarahmlboyd@yahoo.com or subscrible for updated information and posts.
